Hypnotherapy: Everything You Need to Know
Hypnotherapy is essentially self-hypnosis. No one can hypnotize you; you are the one hypnotizing yourself. Hypnosis is a deep state of focused concentration—a heightened state of suggestibility that allows us to bypass the critical functions of the conscious mind and access the subconscious. This is where our beliefs, both positive and negative, as well as our memories, are stored.
Hypnosis Is Not Sleep
Many people mistakenly believe that hypnosis simply involves sitting in a comfortable chair, falling asleep for an hour, and waking up with all their problems magically resolved. This is not the case! Effective therapy requires your full commitment and hard work from both you and your therapist. As I often tell my clients, “If I had a magic wand that could instantly make you better, there would be people queuing for miles to see me! Not to mention, I would be a multi-millionaire…”
What Is Stage Hypnosis?
It’s important to distinguish between clinical hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis. When you see someone on stage who has been hypnotized, it may appear as though they are unaware of their actions. However, they are fully aware and consciously choosing to follow the hypnotist’s instructions in order to enjoy the experience and be the center of attention for a brief period. In hypnotherapy, the main objective is to address and resolve issues that may be holding you back in life.
Key Points About Hypnotherapy and Your Sessions
- You will never be compelled to say or do anything against your will.
- If any suggestions made by me or anyone else conflict with your moral values, you will immediately exit the state of hypnosis.
- You will not involuntarily reveal any information.
- There will never be a time when you are made to act inappropriately.
- You are always in control, while also experiencing a deep state of relaxation.
What Happens While You Are in Hypnosis?
Your subconscious mind becomes open and receptive to the suggestions given to you—provided that these suggestions align with your conscious desires. During the hypnosis session, you will be able to hear everything and remain aware of outside noises and movements, but you won’t be concerned about them.
What Happens in the Sessions?
After your sessions, it’s possible you might feel a bit more unsettled than usual, but that’s perfectly normal. This is an indication that the hypnotherapy is effective! Picture it like emptying a cluttered cupboard: to sort through it, you’ll need to take everything out, which can create a temporary mess. However, the end result of having it organized is well worth that brief chaos.
What Happens After Hypnosis Therapy?
Following a session, you will likely remember almost everything that was said—by both yourself and the hypnotherapist. More importantly, your subconscious will have absorbed everything and begun making necessary changes to reframe or eliminate negative patterns, including limiting beliefs that have prevented you from achieving your goals.
There Is No Magic Wand for Healing
Healing takes time and a concerted effort from both you and your therapist. However, you will leave the session feeling more relaxed and will start to think differently about your challenges. You will be able to drive home, return to work, or continue with your day without any issues.
Hypnotherapy Takes Time and Practice
Practice makes perfect. Each session of hypnosis will generally be at least ten times more effective than the last. Once you complete your program of hypnotherapy, you will have removed or reframed the negative thoughts, feelings, beliefs, and misconceptions that were associated with the issues you wanted to resolve. By releasing the negative energy you’ve been using to contain uncomfortable emotions, you will feel lighter, brighter, more confident, and full of energy and enthusiasm than you ever thought possible. Hypnotherapy with a qualified and experienced therapist can truly change your life.
